Book Club Selections and Selectors
Hey Gang.
I think that we said that we'd just go alphabetically and let everyone choose a book each month.
I made a list of the current book club members, and here's how the selection process falls out.
If you don't want to select a book, that's ok. If you have a bad month, switch with someone. Just post here and let people know.
If you join the book club after EOE and want to select a book, we'll add you to the list.
Trade, opt in, opt out, read a month, skip a month. Whatever makes everyone happy.

What about me? I didn't sign up for East of Eden because I'm too busy with the end of the semester to re-read it, but I didn't know that meant I wasn't signed up for the book club at all.

My PC is still acting up. I think I need an exorcist!
Anyway, Amy would like to trade with Arianej - is that ok? If so, go ahead and select.

I'm bowing out for now, folks. So far, the books have all been books I own and have read (English/Psych double major and just generally avid reader) and I'm seeking new horizons and new authors right now for my rapidly dwindling free time for reading. Have fun - these have been great selections!

A clarification — there are two versions of Speak, Memory:

A. The original edition Speak, Memory AKA Conclusive Evidence
B. The revised version Speak, Memory: An Autobiography Revisited

If at all possible, read the revised Speak Memory: An Autobiography Revisited

Can it be nonfiction? I read an entertaining, light informative book that I think none of you would pick up on your own, but many of you would enjoy. Thoughts?

In all fairness, I'm not trying to be the book club Nazi. Jan did offer a choice. If any of you prefer to read 3 books of Ann Rics's erotica, we can make that the official book club selection.

jankp Wrote:For next month's book, I thought in honor of Aurora Joy, murasaki's new daughter, that I'd select Mahlon F. Croft and Kinuko Croft's Sleeping Beauty. It's only 32 pages, but has gorgeous paintings and the story is more charming than other versions. Otherwise, there's the Trilogy of Sleeping Beauty by Anne Rice's pen name and it's erotica!

Grimm's Tales for Young and Old
by Ralph Manheim
Paperback: 656 pages
Publisher: Anchor Books/Doubleday; (September 9, 1983)
ISBN: 0385189508
Other Editions: Hardcover (1st) | All Editions

Enjoy for your August 2005 selection! Yes, the version is important, this is the most readily available and most long standing translation of the original tales.

This is the third one Jan mentioned. They all look good. Decisions!!!

For October, I'm chosing Mitch Albom's The Five People You Meet in Heaven.

It's available on Amazon, and also in my library (although with a long waiting list, so I thought I'd post early so you can get on the list at your own if need be.)

Short book, 196 pages. Very fast read, which this time of year, is probably a good thing.

I'll start up another thread closer to October 1 with some discussion questions.

I've checked several local libraries for Leaping Beauty and none have it! I did read the first chapter at BN.com and enjoyed it. My kids and I would have enjoyed reading it together! Dang, I can't justify buying it right now so I guess I'm out on this one, too. I guess living in a rural area has its disadvantages, huh?

That would be fun.

Maybe a different format this time around? Perhaps we can get some suggestions on books to read, and I can put them up as a poll. Then everyone can vote on which they would like to read. Of course if 5 people suggest, and only 5 people vote we won't get anywhere, but there may be a lot of books that a lot of us are interested, and that way we can coordinate our reading and discussions.
